What a cycle counts, and why warranties measure it two ways
A warranty may be expressed in years, in cycles or in total energy delivered, and which of those three binds first depends entirely on how hard the battery is worked.

A cycle is not one discharge
The word cycle suggests a discrete event: the battery filled, the battery emptied, one tick on a counter. Real household use looks nothing like that. A battery might be topped up at midday, drawn down in the evening, partly refilled overnight on a cheap rate and drawn again at breakfast.
What management systems count instead is the equivalent full cycle, which totals energy in or out and divides by capacity. Two half-discharges make one equivalent cycle. Four quarter-discharges make one as well. The measure exists because it is the only way to compare batteries used differently, and it is the measure warranties are usually written against.
It is an approximation and it is known to be one. As the previous point about depth of discharge implies, four shallow cycles are not exactly equivalent in wear to one deep one. The convention is a workable simplification rather than a law.
Three limits, and only one of them binds
A typical home battery warranty states three things at once: a period in years, a number of cycles or a quantity of total energy throughput, and a retained capacity threshold. Cover ends when whichever of the first two arrives first, and the third defines what the manufacturer is actually promising.
That structure means the same warranty is a completely different promise for two different households. A household that cycles the battery daily will exhaust a cycle or throughput limit well before the calendar limit. A household that installed the battery for backup and cycles it rarely will reach the calendar limit with most of the throughput allowance unused.
When comparing products, work out which limit your own pattern of use would hit, then compare on that limit alone. Comparing headline warranty years between two products is meaningless if one of them is going to be terminated by throughput long before the years run out.
The retained capacity threshold is the real substance
The third element is the one that decides whether a claim is possible at all. A performance warranty guarantees that the battery will still hold at least a stated proportion of its original usable capacity at the end of the period, and that proportion varies between manufacturers.
A battery that has fallen to just above the threshold has met its warranty completely while delivering noticeably less than it did when new. That is not a loophole; it is the specification working exactly as written. The mistake is reading a long warranty as a promise of unchanged performance rather than a floor beneath declining performance.
It is worth reading how the threshold is verified as well. Measuring the usable capacity of an installed battery is not trivial, generally requires a controlled test rather than a glance at the app, and the procedure a manufacturer will accept is defined in the terms rather than negotiated afterwards.
Cycling harder helps the economics and shortens the warranty
There is a tension here that rarely gets stated. Everything that makes a battery worth owning involves using it more: more cycles, more energy shifted, more of the tariff spread captured. Everything that extends the warranty period involves using it less.
Both are true simultaneously and neither is a reason to change behaviour. If the tariff spread makes a cycle worth having, take the cycle. Consuming warranted throughput is what the throughput is for, and a battery that reaches its throughput limit early has done so by earning its way there. The alternative — preserving warranty coverage by leaving value on the table — is the more expensive option in almost every case.
Where this does matter is in choosing the product. If your pattern will be heavy daily cycling, throughput allowance is the specification to compare and it should be weighted above the headline years.
What the warranty does not cover
Warranties on storage systems typically exclude a familiar list, and the exclusions are worth knowing before rather than after. Installation faults, environmental conditions outside the stated operating range, damage from a supply fault, and use in configurations the manufacturer did not sanction are all generally outside cover.
Operating temperature is the exclusion most likely to catch a real household, because the stated range is often narrower than the conditions in an unheated garage in a cold winter or a loft in a hot summer. Location is a warranty decision as much as a practical one.
Firmware and connectivity conditions appear in some terms as well, requiring the system to remain connected so the manufacturer can monitor it. That is reasonable from their side, since they need data to assess a claim, and it is a condition worth noticing if your intention was to install the thing and never think about it again.
Common questions
Does the app cycle counter match the warranty definition?
Not always, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. Some systems display raw charge and discharge events while the warranty is written against equivalent full cycles or against energy throughput. If a claim ever arises, the definition in the terms is the one that counts.
What happens when the warranty expires?
Nothing, in the sense that the battery keeps working. Capacity continues to decline gradually and the system carries on operating until it either falls below a useful level or something fails. The expiry is a change in who bears the risk, not an end date on the equipment.
Is an extended warranty worth buying?
It depends on which limit your usage will hit, since extending the years does nothing for a household that will exhaust throughput first. Read what is actually being extended before treating it as a straightforward addition of coverage.
